SKILLED STADIUM / KARDINIA PARK TO
BE RENAMED SIMONDS STADIUM
GEELONG CATS KARDINIA PARK
KARDINIA PARK was first renamed in 1999 to 'Shell Stadium' after major employer in Geelong Royal Dutch/Shell. This deal ended in 2001, with regional employment and training company Baytec buying longer term naming rights. However as we all now know, Baytec could barely afford hot water let alone the stadium sponsorship deal so that fell through with Skilled taking over until the present day. Earlier this year it was announced Skilled would not be renewing the naming rights for season 2012, and the search began for a new sponsor.
The partnership with Skilled has been one of the more enduring relationships in the 2000s, with most other stadiums in the country changing stadium naming rights several times; Colonial Stadium / Telstra Dome / Etihad Stadium; Stadium Australia / Telstra Stadium / ANZ Stadium; Optus Oval / MC Labour Park / Visy Stadium cases in point.
Meanwhile Geelong prepares their assault on Collingwood this Saturday for their third flag in five years, with players under supposed injury clouds (or rumours) David Wojcinski and Jimmy Bartel 'training the house down' today in a closed session.
Ageing rocker Meat Loaf, or 'Mr Loaf' as Patrick Keane calls him, is to entertain the crowd from 1:30 onwards, performing an as yet unnamed medley of songs, according to the AFL. The rocker, who turned 64 on Tuesday, is said to be a very big fan of Aussie Rules, commenting recently he "loves the way you guys do those scrums."
