CATS FAIL TEST AGAINST DOCKERS IN UNPROFESSIONAL
GEELONG went down to the Fremantle Dockers by nine points in an unprofessional display in Cameron Ling's 100th game. The Dockers were deserved winners but didn't win any fans with their go-slow tactics in the final quarter. The Cats had several chances to kick the winning goal in the final minutes, but in the end Fremantle's Matthew Pavlich put the icing on the cake, kicking a goal after the final siren to give his team a much needed nine point win.
Geelong trailed by inside two goals at quarter time after kicking three late goals, and lead by three points at half time after an improved second quarter. But both quarters were marred by terrible field kicking and shots at goal. Geelong were goalless until into time on in the first term.
Despite the Cats getting off to a good start after half time to extend their lead to nine points, Fremantle dominated the second half of the third quarter to build a ten point lead at the final change.
In the final quarter Geelong could only manage two goals yet also kicked five behinds. In contrast, the Dockers finished with three straight, one coming after the final siren and another kicked by Jeffrey Farmer, who literally made something out of nothing.
The locals were not happy with umpiring but never are when the team's being beaten. The most puzzling of decisions was in the last thirty seconds - Fremantle's ruckman won posession and blatantly dribbled the ball over the boundary line from fifteen metres out - no free kick. As it was the Cats already had opportunities up forward and missed, so it probably didn't effect the result.
This Friday night Geelong play Collingwood at Telstra Dome - the Pies have now had two wins on the trot, and should go into the match confident. Geelong is hoping to regain Joel Corey and Tom Harley from injury but Steve Johnson won't be back for another couple months after undergoing ankle surgery.
In positive news, Cameron Ling, Darren Milburn and David Johnson and have re-signed - leaving fifteen more players currently out of contract.
