AFL 2017 ROUND 15: GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS GEELONG and GWS played out a thrilling draw tonight, with Cats forward Tom Hawkins having a shot after the siren to win the game but could only manage a behind, which leveled the scores. The umpire for some reason blew his whistle a split-second before Hawkins had his kick, adding to the paint. The Cats led for most of the match but the young side were outran by the Giants in the last 10-15 minutes of the match, unable to even score a behind despite getting enough inside fifties.

Before the bounce there were changes to the side named on Thursday night, as expected skipper Joel Selwood withdrew, replaced by Sam Simpson, son of Sean, who made his AFL debut. Then closer to the first bounce Dan Menzel was withdrawn, replaced by Wylie Buzza who finally got his chance at the big league. All up that made three first-gamers, Zach Guthrie completing the trio. Guthrie and Simpson would not have looked out of place in a TAC Cup game while Buzza looked like he belonged, the number 12 booting two goals.

Patrick Dangerfield bore much responsibility in the midfield and didn't let his team down, amassing 45 possessions kicking one goal and giving his all until the end, helping get the ball down to Hawkins in the game's final seconds.

Earlier today in the VFL (results below) the Cats absolutely tore Coburg a new one, winning by 85 points. In a final quirk no less than three of the officiating umpires had hyphen names, including both goal umpires.
