CATS DEFEAT MAGPIES IN THRILLER AT THE MCG
Ben Jensen 5 April 2014

AFL 2014 ROUND 3 COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES V GEELONG CATS THANKS TO TOM HAWKINS, GEELONG defeated Collingwood at the MCG tonight in front of a bumper crowd of 63,152 people in a solid contest between two sides with designs on the top four. The Cats made two changes before the first bounce, bringing in Jackson Sheringham and Dawson Simpson in place of Corey Enright (ankle) and Lincoln McCarthy. The Cats had the better of the Magpies in the opening quarter but didn't really capitalise, kicking just the three goals and five behinds to the Magpies' four behinds.

The second term however was a real contest, the Magpies certainly getting the better of the Cats with six goals to three, locking the scores up just before half time. Steve Johnson covered an awful lot of ground in the first half, not having an excessive amount of the ball but running up and down the ground.

In the third term Geelong was arguably the better side but a late Collingwood goal kept them in it, the lead 9 points. At one point it looked as though the Cats would really run away with it but the Magpie army willed their side back into it.

It was Collingwood who opened the goal scoring in the final term, the goal not coming until almost halfway through the quarter; the Cats to that point managed just two behinds in what was turning into the story of their night. Skipper Joel Selwood was cleaned up by Taylor Adams after disposing of the ball, no free kick paid but it will certainly be looked at by the AFL's Match Review Panel, whether he is cited or not is another matter.

Tom Hawkins answered back the Collingwood goal, all but blowing the crowd a kiss in a deadpan celebration for his second of the evening; he soon had his third as the quarter went over the halfway mark, this one a snap around his body from about 45m from goal, the celebration much more emphatic but determined.

Geelong fans had a palpitation or two after Jamie Elliot's goal for the Magpies, coming a minute or so after Jimmy Bartel also had a shot for goal but only managed a behind. It got worse, Elliot had his fifth a minute or so later, to make the margin just five points with three minutes and 21 seconds left on the clock, plenty of time for the Magpies to snatch the win.

But like all feel good movies where our hero prevails over the man in the black hat, so it had to tonight. The minute following Elliot's goal was epic; the ball in the Cats' half for most of it but in the area between the centre and the 50m arc, the ball hacking either way. Until the ball ended up via Mitch Duncan in the hands of Hawkins, one minute 21 seconds left on the clock. WOW. Hawkins split the middle for his fourth goal, Geelong fans going completely nuts, outnumbered two to one probably but not for long as Magpies fans streamed out with just 46 seconds left in the match.

The end a bit of an anti climax as a fairly soft holding the ball free kick went the Cats' way at the centre bounce; who professionally milked the clock to lock in the eleven point win.

Following the win, Geelong sits at three from three, pretty much equal with Hawthorn on top of the ladder with percentages more or less even. Collingwood with just the one win find themselves in the bottom half.

The Cats play at home next Saturday night against West Coast; Collingwood on Friday night against the Tigers at the MCG.
