GEELONG'S VFL CAPTAIN JAMES BYRNE WINS JJ LISTON MEDAL

By Ben Jensen GEELONG CAPTAIN JAMES BYRNE has won the Victorian Football League's JJ Liston Medal as the best and fairest player for season 2007. Byrne polled 22 votes over the twenty round season, polling three votes in the final round, edging out Sandringham's Shane Valenti, who polled 20 votes, for the VFL's highest profiled individual award.

Charlie Gardiner was outright fourth on 14 votes while Josh Hunt was equal fifth with 13 votes. Hunt's achievement was the the more remarkable as he also played twelve AFL games during the VFL season, taking part in no more than eight VFL games.

THIS Saturday Geelong plays Kangaroo affiliate North Ballarat in the VFL's 1st Preliminary Final. The likes of Steven King and Travis Varcoe, and probably Shannon Byrnes and Max Rooke will have one last chance to push for an AFL finals spot. The match will be played at Port Melbourne's TEAC Oval and be telecast on ABC TV from 1PM.
