Magpies too strong for Cats
March 12 2003

On Saturday Night at the Telstra Dome Collingwood defeated the Cats by 37 points 5.8.0.10(103) to 1.8.0.9(66) in front of 24,700 fans. After an encouraging start, in front by three goals at quarter time, Geelong were held goalless for the middle two quarters before outscoring the Pies by four goals to one in the forth term.

Geelong were never really in the hunt once lone experienced tall forward Cameron Mooney was forced from the field late in the first term. 2002 leading goalkicker Kent Kingsley did not take part in the match. Collingwood Captain Nathan Buckley and new recruit (and 2000 Brownlow Medalist) Shane Woewodin were dominant throughout the match.

Geelong's backmen not surprisingly saw the most of the footy, with Brenton Sanderson, Tom Harley, and Darren Milburn in the top four ball-winners for the Cats. Significantly, Collingwood players kicked five 'Niners while the Cats could only manage one, from Mooney in the first term.

Geelong next faces Essendon in a practice match at Lavington this Friday at 7:00PM.
