BOMBER DECLARES 2011 WILL BE THE END

By Justin Kremmer GEELONG premiership coach Mark Thompson has publicly spoken in an interview with the Herald Sun about his future with Geelong, saying his current two year contract is likely to see him out. Thompson seemed confident that his time at the Cats will finish at the end of 2011 admitting he was keen to pursue a “few other business interests” outside of football and to “live a bit more”.

“I just signed for two years and that’s it . . . and the club pretty much knows that,” said Thompson. “I reckon this is my last two years and I’m going to get out and do some other stuff.”

Thompson told of his hunger to continue the club’s success next year and said he had started plans for the 2010 season on the Monday after last month’s Grand Final win.

“I want to leave the place in good shape and I want to be successful next year.”

CEO Brian Cook agreed ‘Bomber’ was looking hungry to win what no other coach has done before at Geelong, a third flag in his time.

“He will go flat out to win a flag in the next two years, that’s the impression I’ve got,” said Cook.

Cook was also quick to put many Geelong fans at ease by taking a different view to Thompson’s comments and said the future of the dual premiership coach could very well still go beyond 2011.

“In the 20 years I’ve been a chief executive, I have often heard a coach say, ‘This will probably be my last term’, and somehow that attitude changes often.”
