COSTELLO PROMISES CASH FOR GEELONG'S SKILLED STADIUM
Ben Jensen 15 September 2007

By Ben Jensen FEDERAL TREASURER AND PM WANNABEE PETER COSTELLO has evoked the sporting card while on a whirlwind electioneering visit to Geelong yesterday. The Essendon number one ticket holder claims to have spoken to high ranking Geelong officials such as Frank Costa and Brian Cook about stumping up more millions for the next stage of the ground's development.

"The Government will strongly support the redevelopment at the Skilled Stadium - 'the Cattery'. We want to support the improvement of the grandstand and public facilities at the home of the Geelong Football Club", Costello said.

Costello also jumped on board the bandwagon for the finals, hoping to be associated with at least one winning organisation this Spring. "I am supporting (Geelong) a) because they are a Victorian club; b) because they are not Collingwood; and c) because they are coached by somebody whose first name is 'Bomber'."

MEANWHILE, GEELONG has resisted the temptation to name any players from Sunday's win in the AFL 1st Qualifying Final in the VFL Preliminary Final this Saturday at TEAC Oval. The Cats thrashed the Roosters last time the two teams met, to the tune of seventy-one points.

VFL Captain James Byrne, anointed the JJ Liston Trophy winner on Monday night, leads the side. Former AFL skipper Steven King has been named, and has his final chance to press for a spot in Geelong's AFL side. For Kangaroos affiliated North Ballarat, emergencies for the AFL side Leigh Harding and Matt Campbell have been named while third emegency Leigh Brown, dropped after his poor performance at the MCG on Sunday, has not and will presumably be a late inclusion on Saturday.
