TOM HAWKINS NAMED NAB AFL RISING STAR FOR ROUND 3
Ben Jensen 17 April 2007

By Ben Jensen BIG GEELONG CAT TOM 'TOMAHAWK' HAWKINS has been named the NAB AFL Rising Star for round 3. With seven goals from his first two matches the selection panel couldn't really go past Hawkins, who thus far has met expectations and hopes of the Geelong faithful.

On Sunday Hawkins booted four first half goals against Melbourne at the MCG before spending about half the time off the field the remainder of the match. In his debut match against Carlton at Telstra Dome Saturday week ago he booted three goals.

18 year old Hawkins, 197 cm tall and 105 kg, is now eligible to win the NAB AFL Rising Star award for 2007. The winner receives a 'personal investment folio and a dedicated personal banker', provided of course by the identify challenged National Australia Bank (aka NAB or nab depending on which press release or brochure you read).

Geelong’s Tom Hawkins wins Round 3 NAB AFL Rising Star Nomination

Tom Hawkins from the Geelong Football Club is the Round Three NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.

The 20-year-old key forward proved his exciting Round Two debut was no fluke, kicking four first half goals in Geelong’s 52-point win over Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday.

At 197cm and 105kgs, Tom has now booted seven goals in just two AFL games.

He was selected by Geelong at number 41 in the 2006 NAB AFL Draft under the father-son rule. His father Jack Hawkins played 182 games with Geelong from 1973-1981.

A 2005 AIS-AFL Academy graduate, Tom was the talk of the 2006 NAB AFL Under 18 Championships after a dominant display against South Australia where he took 15 marks and kicked six goals.

He capped off an impressive carnival winning the Larke Medal for best Division One player and gaining All-Australian selection at full forward.

Tom hails from Finley, NSW, the same town in which Hawthorn champion Shane Crawford began his career. [ED NOTE: And also the town in which my dear Father was born.]
