Ben Jensen 26 March 2010

By Ben Jensen GEELONG V ESSENDON REIGNING AFL Premiers Geelong face Essendon at the MCG tonight. The Cats have included star midfielder Joel Corey while the Bombers have named two recruits, rookie Ben Howlett and former Hawk forward Mark Williams. Geelong are unbackable favourites with the bookies, paying tops of $1.24 with the Bombers paying upwards of $4. The Cats are pretty much at full strength, missing only Max Rooke, Travis Varcoe and retired Tom Harley from the Premiership side. Josh Hunt is welcomed back after missing last season, having done his knee in the winning NAB Cup final.

Tom Lonergan takes over from his retired namesake, Harley, in the key defensive position, a duty he will share with Matthew Scarlett and Harry Taylor. Mitch Duncan, the 18 year old from Joel Corey's club East Perth, takes advantage of Varcoe's absence to make his AFL debut while Steve Motlop and Nathan Djerrkura are the two emergencies eyeing off a place should Corey succumb to injury.

CATS GIVE BOMBERS A HIDING
Ben Jensen 31 May 2009

By Ben Jensen AFL 2009 ROUND 10 ESSENDON V GEELONG CATS GEELONG thumped Essendon by sixty-four points at Etihad Stadium this afternoon in front of just under 49,000 punters. Steve Johnson went one better than last week with six goals, while Cameron Mooney enjoyed his first game back from suspension bagging four. While the Bombers opened the goal scoring on the night, the Cats booted the next six to build a thirty-three point lead at quarter time and were never challenged from that point onwards, although the Bombers did outscore them six goals to three in the final term. Joel Corey was a late withdrawl with a footy injury, replaced by Shannon Byrnes who himself missed las week. Geelong skipper Tom Harley is another injury concern, having left the field clutching his right hamstring and set to miss at least the next two games.
