AFL ROUND 1 2011; GEELONG V ST KILDA; MATCH PREVIEW INCLUDING TEAM LISTS, TV DETAILS
Ben Jensen 24 March 2011

By Ben Jensen twitter.com/thecattery GEELONG CATS V ST KILDA SAINTS 2009 and 2010 runners-up St Kilda and 2009 Premiers Geelong clash at the MCG on day two of the 2011 AFL season this Friday night. The Saints will be out to put the 'Dickileaks' scandal behind them while the Cats are keen to prove they're not a spent force just yet despite the loss of Gary Ablett for a big bag o' cash from the Gold Coast Suns. As our mate John Harms says, Football poetry has resumed!

GEELONG has named Cameron Guthrie, pick 23 in last year's national draft on the interchange bench along with other young guns Dan Menzel (forward pocket), Mitch Duncan (named centre) and youngish Taylor Hunt. The Cats' three emergencies are Allen Christensen, Josh Cowan and interestingly, 2010 All Australian Paul Chapman. Chapman misses out on playing 200 games while Corey Enright will reach the milestone, with Shannon Byrnes and Mark Blake each miss out on their milestone, remaining stuck on 99 games. Just the one ruckman, in Brad Ottens, with Blake, Dawson Simpson and Trent West all absent. Guthrie will be Cat # 1025 I am told, surely one of many debuts to be made this season.

Tomorrow night at the MCG is going to be part excitement and part annoyance for me. Having lived without footy the past three season, except from arriving back in the country just in time to make it to the 2010 preliminary final, we grew accustomed to just following the game from afar, be it getting up at 3am to watch it on Setanta/ESPN/Justin.tv, or more likely, recording the game safe in the knowledge nobody's going to spoil the result for you! Or on a Friday at work, listening via the 3G mobile phone as the mongrels at my employer banned it. So long story cut short, have just about weaned myself off needing a weekly dose of live footy!

But like any addiction, you're never really not an addict, you might just keep off the gear, so tomorrow night I'll be joining my old man and the younger brother after work (that's if the wee brother can GET AWAY from his work, poor kid's working double-time at a well-known law firm in the quiet end of Collins Street) to make the trek to the MCG. Hopefully the pre-match ritual will include a quick meal somewhere and a frothy or two; who cares I don't own a car anyway!

Big decisions to be made prior to the game; exactly what Geelong 'freebie' are we going to opt for?! I believe the choices are from a granny blanket, cap, scarf and maybe one or two more choices. Decisions! Currently I'm in favour of the blanket!

Hopefully we manage to grab some decent seats tomorrow, just got GA this season for the four Melbourne games. Would have reserved seats had all games have been at Etihad Stadium as they were in the past, but at the MCG why bother hey?

Enjoy the game, reckon we'll really struggle but still have quality in the side to get us over the line. Let us know how you're going during the game! twitter.com/thecattery

CATS LOSE TO ST KILDA; FACE FREMANTLE OR HAWTHORN IN ELIMINATION FINAL
Ben Jensen 3 September 2010

By Ben Jensen (Dubai, UAE) GEELONG CATS V ST KILDA SAINTS ST KILDA upstaged Geelong at the MCG tonight, hanging on despite a surge from the Cats late in the game, winning by four points. Cats fans though and indeed the players were furious after a Cameron Ling goal that would have given them the lead was disallowed after a 50/50 free kick was paid. In Cameron Mooney's words 'you've just cost us the game'; we watched the game from our hotel in Dubai, and now face the prospect of attending next week's Elimination Final so long as it doesn't clash with the old man's 65th on the Saturday night..
