AFL 2017 ROUND 23 GEELONG CATS V GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS; MATCH PREVIEW & TEAMS
Ben Jensen 24 August 2017

AFL 2017 ROUND 23: GEELONG CATS V GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS GEELONG and Greater Western Sydney face off at Simonds Stadium on Saturday evening to decide who will take the crucial second spot on the AFL ladder. There is also a chance for the Giants to take top spot should the Crows lose in Perth to West Coast while the Cats would have to win by around 140 goals to take top spot in the same scenario. There are three key ins for the Cats: two former Best and Fairest winners in Mark Blicavs and Tom Hawkins, and young gun Brandan Parfitt. Left out are Sam Simpson, Zach Guthrie and Jackson Thurlow, all omitted.

Greater Western Sydney has made two changes bringing in former Geelong champion Steve Johnson along with big man Rory Lobb who has played well against the Cats in the past. Left out of the Giants side are Harrison Himmelberg, Matt de Boer. The VFL side plays Essendon on the Sunday also at Simonds Stadium while the VFL Women's side plays away at Mulgrave against the Eastern Devils.

Ben Jensen 1 July 2017

AFL 2017 ROUND 15: GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS V GEELONG CATS GEELONG and GWS played out a thrilling draw tonight, with Cats forward Tom Hawkins having a shot after the siren to win the game but could only manage a behind, which leveled the scores. The umpire for some reason blew his whistle a split-second before Hawkins had his kick, adding to the paint. The Cats led for most of the match but the young side were outran by the Giants in the last 10-15 minutes of the match, unable to even score a behind despite getting enough inside fifties.
