CATS BEAT FRANKSTON IN VFL; SELWOOD A CHANCE TO PLAY AGAINST HAWKS
Ben Jensen 21 April 2007

By Ben Jensen THE BENDIGO BANK CATS were too good for Frankston this afternoon, leading most of the day to win by six goals. Rookie listed Todd Grima backed up his six goals last week with a bag of five while Tim Callan was best on ground. Son of Geelong great and 1989 Brownlow medallist Paul Couch, Tom, kicked a goal in his VFL debut.

Two of the three emergencies for Sunday's game against Hawthorn in Tasmania, Kane Tenace and Charlie Gardiner, played while Joel Selwood sat out and is a chance to play on Sunday as he did last week as a literal last minute change. Tenace and Gardiner did their future selection prospects no harm, both being named in the best players.

Geelong trailed by nine points at quarter time but blew Frankston away with an eight goal second quarter. The Cats restricted the Dolphins to three goals six behinds in the second half, scoring four goals three behinds themselves.

Jarad, or Max, Rooke played the first quarter but soon left the field due to an injury concern. Jason Davenport also suffered an injury in the second term, variously reported as a knee or ankle.

Steve Johnson is 'purring along' and has the selectors counting down the weeks until he is eligible for AFL selection, while fellow forward Henry Playfair had a Barry Crocker (a shocker). Trent West rucked well in the wet and kicked one goal. Charlie Gardiner played closer to goal as a market target and presented well. Travis Varcoe kicked two goals and shrugged off any disappointment over being dropped back from the AFL squad.

Thanks to folks from Cats Claw and Bigfooty for the reports.
