CATS IN GREAT ESCAPE VIA PATRICK DANGERFIELD OVER THE POWER
Ben Jensen 25 May 2017

AFL 2017 ROUND 10: GEELONG CATS V PORT ADELAIDE POWER GEELONG well and truly had a great escape tonight, trailing by 4 points with just over a minute to go, rescued by a very sore Patrick Dangerfield who somehow kicked a goal from a pack of what seemed like dozens of players in the teeth of goal at the Gary Ablett Terrace end. The Cats had struggled to kick a goal in the final quarter as did the Power, the Cats took a five point lead into the final term but soon fell behind. Port Adelaide could easily have kicked another goal to seal the match a minute or so earlier but coughed it up, the Port player taking too long to take his shot form inside fifty, the Cats rebounding and eventually the ball finding Dangerfield who kicked his third for the night, Geelong's only multiple goal-kicker.

Being a school night the crowd at just under 25,000 was down on last Friday night's 30,000, but before the game fans were treated to a motorcade of players from the 2007 AFL Premiership side including the likes of Paul Chapman, Mark Thompson and Nathan Ablett; see a video and photo or two below. The weather was much colder than last Friday and being a school night this match report will be rather brief! Mitch Duncan was our pick as BOG, well equal with skipper Joel Selwood who took a hanger of a mark in the final quarter. Jordan Murdoch played a good game as did Jed Bews and more more Zach Tuohy. Dangerfield was good but was pretty sore in the final term and really had to muscle and will himself back into the contest, which he did superbly. Zac Smith in the ruck really had his work cut out against Paddy Ryder and friends while other Geelong talls Mark Blicavs and Harry Taylor had little influence on the game.

In the end the experience of the Cats won out, either side would have been deserving winners. The Cats were fortunate in the end though they really should have went into half time four or five goals up instead of eight points. The Power after their week off following the match in China head back to Adelaide licking their wounds. On Saturday the women's side plays Cranbourne down at Cranbourne while the VFL side has a week off with the split round.
