MAGPIES SMASH CATS THIRD YEAR IN A ROW; GEELONG VFL SIDE HAS A WIN
Ben Jensen 30 April 2017

AFL 2017 ROUND 6 GEELONG CATS V COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES GEELONG lost their first game of the season today against Collingwood, who have beaten the Cats the last few years and now won something like six of the past eight clashes. The Cats started well enough with a goal in the first minute to Nakia Cockatoo but the Magpies soon struck back, equaling the Cats' three goals for the term and took a four point lead into quarter time. The second quarter saw the Magpies step up a couple gears with the Cats stuck in neutral falling seventeen points behind at the main break. Collingwood's six goals to three the third quarter quarter all but ended it, the Cats facing a 35 point deficit just to level the scores, which was never on the cards. The winning margin was 29 points which just about flattered Geelong who were expected to deal with Collingwood if only due to the fact the Magpies played on ANZAC Day - just five days ago.

Instead it was the Magpies who stood up, erasing the memory of Tuesday's loss to Essendon and ruining the Cats' day on which they announced coach Chris Scott had been re-signed until 2019. Leaders Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood were well down, while Irishman Zach Tuohy was the best for the Cats. Jed Bews made the most of his first chance in the AFL all season, kicking a goal and named in the best players. Collingwood skipper Scott Pendlebury had an ordinary ANZAC Day game but was just about best on ground today. Geelong young gun Brandan Parfitt's day ended early with a nasty hamstring injury while former Cat Travis Varcoe suffered the same fate but would have felt happier beating his old side. The VFL side had a win at home yesterday, over Casey Demons by 46 points. Rhys Stanley kicked three goals and continues to press for selection, along with Tom Ruggles named in the best. Next Saturday night the Cats play Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium who they've beaten the last couple seasons but lost the last time they played on the Gold Coast.
