GEELONG GO DOWN IN NAIL BITER AT MORON PARK
B Jensen May 30 2004

GEELONG lead for most of the day in a thrilling match of the round at AAMI stadium today. But they gave it all away in the second half, courtesy of some poor kicking in the final quarter when goals were needed. After leading by 20 points at half time, Geelong kicked five goals in the third term to Port's eight goals.

In the final quarter Port snatched the lead only for Geelong to grab it back. Geelong battled gallantly against sortie after sortie into the Power forward line. But Port jumped to a lead of ten points; a brilliant goal to Peter Riccardi pegging the lead back to four points with just seven seconds to go.

Attempts by Kent Kingsley, Ben Graham, Andrew Mackie and Riccardi earlier in the forth quarter were to no avail, the Cats booting three goals three behinds for the quarter, against the Power's four goals two behinds.

For Geelong Ben Graham booted five goals, other multiple goalkickers David Haynes, Gary Ablett, Cameron Mooney and James Bartel, all with two. Port had an astonishing thirteen goalkickers, Brett Ebert leading the way with four.

One can only wonder what would have happened if the game was not played in front of the one sided crowd; would Umpires really have thrown the whistle away in that final term as Geelong players were crunched?

Next Sunday (surprise surprise a Sunday game) Geelong faces the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome. At eighth position on the ladder, Geelong's record now stands at five wins, five losses, while the Bulldogs are in thirteenth position with three wins and seven losses.

In another blow to Geelong supporters, the VFL side was similarly pipped by the Coburg Tigers. No doubt Phil 'That's Unfair' Cleary would be happy.
