MATCH PREVIEW PLUS TV / RADIO BROADCAST DETAILS By Ben Jensen AFL 2009 ROUND 5 GEELONG V BRISBANE LIONS FINAL TEAMS GEELONG acting Captain Cameron Ling is out of the clash with Brisbane Lions at Skilled Stadium this Sunday, after being diagnosed with a slightly torn achilles. The match will be Joel Selwood's 50th game for the Cats since making his debut in 2007. Coming into the side are Darren Milburn and David Johnson. Tom Lonergan makes way for Milburn while Johnson will take Ling's tagging role, Ryan Gamble and Nathan Djerrkura are named are emergencies along with Lonergan. The Bookies (Betting Guide) are backing the Cats in, not surprisingly, but the Lions (paying about $6) are going to take it right up to the Cats who may struggle to contain Jonathan Brown. The Match will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 on Foxtel. Johnson will play only his second game since being arrested on Grand Final eve in 2007. He played once in 2008, against Hawthorn in round 17. Geelong by 46 points PREVIEW Joel Corey will captain the side for the first time, in the absence of Tom Harley and Cameron Ling who are both out injured. Since making his debut against the Saints as an 18 year old in late season 2000, Corey has featured in just about every Geelong game, since 2002 only missing only three games, all through injury. His on field leadership by example was rewarded earlier this year when he was elevated to the official leadership group with role of deputy Vice Captain under Harley and Ling (see main article Leadership Reshuffle for the Cats). Joel Corey Statistics (external site) The Selectors are sticking with Tom Hawkins up forward for the time being, resisting the temptation to overreact to his struggles last week by bringing in Tom Lonergan. Lonergan, who played last week but down back, has made way for Darren Milburn who he replaced at the last minute. David Johnson, who has been redeeming himself since his run-in with the law in the wee hours of Grand Final eve 2007, gets his chance to play as a tagger in the absence of Ling. Johnson was in and out of the side in 2007 and in the end lost out to Josh Hunt and David Wocjinski for a back pocket role. He has a history of playing well against the Lions, although he was usually paired against Jason Akermanis, who of course now plays for the Bulldogs. Shane Mumford holds onto the spot of #2 ruckman over Trent West after last week's performance, but the Cats' brains trust will still be longing for the day Brad Ottens and Mark Blake are their match day ruck pairing; with Ottens in the side the Cats typically perform better. Also on the outer is Ryan Gamble who does all right when he gets the chance in terms of getting on the scoreboard, but he does not always make the most of his chances and perhaps isn't seen by the selectors as being the right fit at the moment; time will tell. Expect Harry Taylor to get first crack at Jonathan Brown with Matthew Scarlett taking Daniel Bradshaw. We'd expect to see them switch often enough, particularly if Brown gets on top of Taylor, as may happen later on in the game similar to round one against Hawthorn when Franklin and Roughead finally broke through the Geelong defense. Hard to see how the Lions midfield can come close to stopping Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel, Corey, James Kelly, Joel Selwood and Paul Chapman from running amok up and down the corridor of the narrow Kardinia Park; let alone Corey Enright and David Wojcinski. In fact Bartel may not be as damaging up forward this week, having played a new role down back for the Cats when required. Geelong fans hopefully will likely spend most of the game debating the merits of Shannon Byrnes and Travis Varcoe's places in the side; be that as it may they've both done enough to retain their places in recent weeks, with TV in front by our reckoning. However a poor performance from Byrnes and he may find his position under pressure from Nathan Djerrkura, who has been a regular fixture on Geelong's emergency list the past year. All in all should be a good day down at Geelong, possibly one of the last before the weather turns sour. (Be careful what you wish for if you're in the Hickey stand!) Cats by 46 points.

2008, ROUND 7 SATURDAY 3 MAY 2008, 14:10, SKILLED STADIUM CATS EDGE OUT LIONS By Ben Jensen GEELONG defeated Brisbane by twenty-seven points at Skilled Stadium today, surviving a spirited challenge by the Lions after scores were almost leveled early in the final term. Brownlow favourite Gary Ablett was a late withdrawal after suffering general soreness all over, including a calf muscle, after his unsportinglike treatment by various Fremantle Dockers last Friday night. Ablett's place was taken by Max Rooke, getting the nod ahead of other two emergencies Brent Prismall and Travis Varcoe. To be fair, the Lions had their own significant injury worries - Jonathan Brown and Simon Black took no part in the match. GEELONG 4.1 7.6 11.8 15.15 (105) DEFEATED
