CATS MAKE LIGHT WORK OF LIONS
Ben Jensen 26 April 2009

By Ben Jensen AFL 2009 ROUND 5 GEELONG V BRISBANE LIONS ON A DAY in which terrible weather dashed hopes of a decent crowd, Geelong swatted aside Brisbane by ninety-three points at Skilled Stadium today. Despite the gale force winds and rain, Gary Ablett again picked up a lazy forty possessions and two goals in a day of domination all over the ground. Tom Hawkins and Cameron Mooney each not only kicked three goals but gathered twenty possessions. Other ball magnets were Darren Milburn in his first game back from injury, Paul Chapman and Joel Selwood, playing his 50th game. HAVE YOUR SAY

Making a mockery of The Cattery's pre-match prediction of good weather, a tiny crowd of 15,580 braved the conditions and were rewarded by another episode of the 'Gary Ablett Show', with plenty of supporting cast.

Geelong coach Mark 'Bomber' Thompson was wrapt with the performance of Mooney and Hawkins, and wasn't afraid to talk about it in the press conference afterwards.

"Mooney and Hawkins were both fantastic; looked like they had energy, they were alive and they had a good understanding. We would love for Hawk to play like that every week because he really looked like a comfortable, accomplished AFL player today. I thought it was clearly the best game he has played," said Thompson.

Thompson was more pleased with Hawkins' twenty touches of the ball than the three goals. "I know he's kicked more goals and everything else in some games. But he was just involved in the game."

Alex I don't know what game you were watching mate, the selectors HAVE to stick Tom Hawkins, there's nothing else to it. If Nathan Ablett was still around I'd have picked him first but Hawkins is the next best key forward after Mooney at the club, and I think he'll prove to be up to elite standard soon enough. You may be right on Byrnes but I think Varcoe is a great player and adds a lot to the side.

He may have kicked a few easy goals but I don't think Hawkins is up to AFL standard, not at Geelong anyway (maybe at Collingwood). Byrnes did all right but I still want him and/or Varcoe out of the side. Should never had let Prismall go to the Bombers, I'd rather him running around than those two.
