Cats given lesson by beleaguered Bombers

Ben Jensen 19 May 2018, AFL Round 9 2018, Essendon Bombers v Geelong Cats GEELONG were given a belting by Essendon at the MCG in a Saturday twilight fixture, a week after the Bombers were defeated by Carlton and sacked Mark Neeld in the process. It was perhaps predictable the Cats would drop a game to a team on paper they should have beaten but it’s happened a lot over the past three seasons. Brownlow medallist Patrick Dangerfield contested a surprising number of ruck contests prompting questions over just what the ruck strategy is. Outscored five goals to two in the opening quarter and four goals to none in the second, it was a dirty day by the Cats. The game was basically all over when Tom Hawkins kicked three of the final five goals, Joel Selwood the other, the final margin flattering the Cats.

Earlier on Saturday The Cattery visited Kardinia Park observing injured players Lachie Henderson, Tim House, Cameron Guthrie and Esava Ratugolea among others having a special hitout. In the VFL the Bombers also got the better of the Cats on Saturday, trailing at three quarter time but running out winners in the final term by 7 points. On Sunday in the VFL Women’s the Cats gave the poor old Bombers a fair old belting, eight goals to just four behinds.
