Second win for Cats over Eagles in Gather Round

Geelong Cats v West Coast Eagles, AFL 2023 round 5 Ben Jensen GEELONG picked up their second win of the season, untroubled by West Coast yesterday at the Adelaide Oval. The Eagles stuck with the Cats for much of the first quarter but by the first break trailed by 18 points. A nine goal second term all but sealed the match for the Cats, in a high scoring match that saw five players kick four goals – Jeremy Cameron, Tom Hawkins, Brad Close for Geelong and Jake Waterman and Oscar Allen for West Coast. Ollie Henry should have had four or five goals himself but butchered most attempts at goal, finishing with two.

The win boosts the Cats up to tenth on the ladder with percentage of 119%. The Cats’ only two wins however have been over the bottom two sides so there’s still a bit of work to go. This Saturday night is the first match at GMHBA Stadium with the 2022 premiership flag to be unveiled. Tyson Stengle won’t be playing however after fracturing the ‘midshaft of the radius’ of his left arm while Rhys Stanley, who seems to have been injured in every match so far, this time is out for a while with a fractured right eye socket.

In the VFL both teams had wins, the women accounting for the Saints on Sunday morning, the men getting the better of Werribee Sunday afternoon. It was the third win on the trot for Elise Coventry’s women in shocking conditions at Trevor Barker Oval. Conditions were also slippery and wet for the men at Avalon Airport Oval, the side having a bye next week.
