Seven goals for Tom Hawkins, injury to Tom Stewart sours Cats’ win over Lions

Ben Jensen 28 July 2018, AFL Round 19 2018, Geelong Cats v Brisbane Lions GEELONG accounted for the Brisbane Lions today after being tested for much of the first half but going on with it thanks to a volley of goals from forwards Tom Hawkins, Jack Henry and Dan Menzel, Hawkins kicking seven for the second week in a row, Henry and Menzel helping themselves to three apiece.

Tom Stewart looks at risk of a stint on the sidelines after hurting his ankle towards the second half. It was reported the injury occurred during the play with Lion Rhys Mathieson causing the ankle to buckle. We witnessed the aftermath with a Lion standing over Stewart who was on the ground trying to get up – umpire #32 came over but by then the Lion was off – Stewart then could not put any weight on his ankle and was then helped off the ground – seen later wearing a ‘moon boot’.

It is not condescending to say the Lions put in quite a good effort for they did, tall forward Eric Hipwood getting a cheer when he finally kicked a goal in the last quarter, after taking a few good marks earlier in the game only to butcher the kick. There were plenty of Lions who stood up though amusingly we only remembered Luke Hodge was playing when he saw him after the game walking off. Brisbane could well have been in front at quarter time had they taken advantage of their opportunities a little earlier and only trailed by 11 points at half time – and that margin was pushed out from an after the siren goal from Hawkins.

There was no VFL or VFLW for the Cats this weekend with both sides having the bye.
