Cats untroubled by Suns

Ben Jensen 3 June 2018, AFL Round 11 2018, Gold Coast Suns v Geelong Cats GARY ABLETT enjoyed his return trip to the Gold Coast with an 85 point win on a weekend in which all three Geelong sides won – The VFL women beating Melbourne Uni by one point in a thriller on Sunday and the VFL guys belting Carlton affiliate Northern Blues by 70 points on Saturday. At Metricon Stadium the Gold Coast Suns looked like they may be in with a chance very early on kicking the first and third goals of the match, thereafter getting stomped on by the Cats led by former skipper Ablett.

Geelong kicked away after taking a seven point lead into quarter time outscoring the Suns seven goals to one in the second quarter. Gold Coast only kicked for goals for the match – two in the first and two in the third quarters, scoring a solitary behind in the other two putting in a very poor display. Ablett was certainly the Cats’ best booting three goals as did Tom Hawkins. Comeback kid Lincoln McCarthy snagged two as did Sam Menegola and recruit of the year Tim Kelly. Mitch Duncan as he has been in recent weeks was quietly solid and must be pleasing the Geelong match committee.

Rhys Stanley took primary ruck duties at most centre-bounces, Wylie Buzza mostly playing as a forward in his first AFL game of the season, not troubling the scorers besides one behind picking up just three kicks. Aaron Black in his second AFL game as a defender did enough to retain his spot for next Saturday against his old side North Melbourne at GMHBA Stadium. See immediately below and further down for videos of two of Gary Ablett’s goals – he plays his two hundredth game for the Cats next weekend so be there.
